What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

No couch required, no childhood interrogation. A plain-language walkthrough of what actually happens in session one.

The number one question we get from new clients isn’t about fees or scheduling. It’s some version of: “What actually happens in there?”

Fair question. Movies have done therapy no favors. So here’s a plain-language walkthrough of a first session at Meridian.

Before you arrive

You’ll fill out a short intake form online — history, current concerns, goals. It takes about ten minutes and means we don’t spend your first session on paperwork.

The first ten minutes

We cover the practical stuff: confidentiality and its limits, how scheduling works, what to do between sessions. You can ask anything. Clients who ask blunt questions early tend to do great in therapy, so don’t hold back.

The middle: your story, your way

Then we talk about why you’re here. You don’t need a rehearsed speech. “Things feel off and I’m not sure why” is a perfectly good opening. Your therapist will ask questions, but you set the depth. Nothing is required disclosure in week one.

The last ten minutes: a plan

This is where Meridian may differ from therapy you’ve had before. We end the first session with a working plan: what we think is going on, the approach we’d suggest, and roughly what progress should look like. You’ll leave knowing what you’re signing up for.

What you won’t get

No lying on a couch (unless you want to — it’s comfortable). No silent nodding for fifty minutes. No dream analysis, unless dreams are genuinely bothering you.

Mostly, a first session is a structured conversation with someone trained to listen well. That’s it. That’s the mystery.
